Synopsis

A story about Ok-nyeo, a talented girl born and raised in prison but gains great skill and wisdom through her encounters with extraordinary people from all walks of life. She becomes a crusader for the oppressed peasant class and embarks on a journey to find the class she belongs to in the caste system. Through the life of Ok-nyeo, this TV miniseries introduces Joseon’s proud legacy of human rights laws, which Ok-nyeo fights to enact throughout the kingdom.

She is a precocious child who was born in a prison where she encounters many extraordinary and highly-educated people. Through them, she learns a wealth of knowledge. She can recall any article from common law, which she studied, and amazes judges and the prison guards with her expert grasp of the legal system. Ok-nyeo dreams of becoming a Damo official (茶母) at the royal police administration. She wants to know her mother’s past before she died giving birth to Ok-nyeo in prison. But her fate is altered after she meets Park Tae-soo, Yoon Tae-won and Sung Ji-heon.

Yoon Tae-won – Played by Go Soo

Queen consort Munjeong’s younger half-brother and illegitimate son (庶子) of politician Yoon Won-hyung. Tae-won’s mother is Hong-mae (紅梅), the most beautiful gisaeng in the capital of Hanyang. Tae-won realizes that he has a knack for being a merchant and goes into business whereupon he becomes the kingpin of commerce in the Maponaru area. Tae-won also set up a Wejibu law firm (外知部) to represent the uneducated yangmin lower class and merchants.

Queen Consort Munjeong – Played by Kim Mi-sook

Third queen consort to King Jungjong and mother of King Myeongjong. She is evil, greedy and resorts to trickery. After poisoning King Injong, she makes her own son, Myeongjong, the new king. She gives her younger brother Yoon Won-hyung the task of eliminating the Yoon faction that opposes her and he duly instigates the Fourth Literati Purge of 1545. After her son, Myeongjong became the king, she ruled as the regent for eight years and even after her regency ended, she continued to meddle with royal affairs that was taxing on King Myeongjong.

Yoon Won-hyung – Played by Jung Joon-ho

He wielded enormous power during the reign of King Myeongjong. Brother of Queen consort Mun-jeong, he uses every means necessary to take over the government and succeeds in this. When his nephew becomes the new king, he instigated the Fourth Literati Purge of 1545 to eliminate the strong faction in the Yoon family clan (大尹). Together with his concubine Chung Nan-jung, he ruled the kingdom with abandon and lived an indecent life. There is one regret he has in his life of self-indulgence and extreme wealth and that is the existence of his son Yoon Tae-won.

Chung Nan-jung – Starring Park Ju-mi

She was born as a “nobi” slave but while working as a gisaeng entertainer, she used her beauty and wit to charm Yoon Won-hyung and become his concubine. Through an introduction arranged by Yoon Won-hyung, she gets to meet Queen consort Munjeong, and becomes her close confidante that comes with the perks of enjoying the opulent lifestyle of royalty. Full of ambition, Chung Nan-jung succeeds in winning the trust of Queen consort Munjeong. She succeeds in forcing Yoon Won-hyung to make her his legal wife and relegating his first and seconds wives to lower stations than her. She is an unstoppable, determined woman.
